What to Expect
A step-by-step guide to behind-the-wheel instruction, driving lessons, scheduling, and preparation designed to help teen drivers build confidence and succeed on the road.
Getting Started
- We schedule students by date of birth each quarter to help align driving lessons with Minnesota licensing timelines.
- The best time to begin behind-the-wheel lessons is after 10–20 hours of supervised driving practice, though we welcome students with more or less experience.
- We recommend completing some supervised driving practice before scheduling lessons. This helps students feel more comfortable, confident, and prepared behind the wheel.
About Each Behind-the-Wheel Session
- Students must complete six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction to become eligible for the Minnesota driver’s road test.
- To meet the state requirement, students schedule three separate driving lessons.
- All driving sessions begin and end at Eastview High School.
- Students are expected to gain experience in a variety of driving conditions, including nighttime driving, rain, and winter weather.
- Lessons continue in most weather conditions unless roads become unsafe or undrivable. If weather conditions require cancellation, families will receive a phone call.
Scheduling Your Driving Lessons
- When you hear from one of our instructors, it’s time to begin scheduling your driving lessons.
- We do not wait until students are “road test ready” before beginning instruction. Our approach focuses on teaching safe driving techniques early so students can continue practicing those skills with their families between lessons.
Lesson Structure
- We prefer to schedule driving lessons close together so each behind-the-wheel session builds naturally on the previous lesson.
- This structure helps students improve faster, retain important driving skills, and build confidence behind the wheel.
After Completion
- Once students complete their 6-hour behind-the-wheel program, we encourage families to continue supervised driving practice to strengthen skills, prepare for the road test, and build real-world driving experience.
What to Bring to Each Session
- Valid Minnesota instruction permit
- Corrective lenses, if required
- Sunglasses for sunny conditions
- Proper footwear (no sandals, flip-flops, or heels)
